The intestinal tract can serve as an accessory to the breathing apparatus.

Oxygen is taken from swallowed water and air is dispersed into the bloodstream by the intestines highly vascularised surface. Unused air is expelled via the anal vent however as with all fish, carbon dioxide is expelled via the gills.
