The dorsal fin, acts primarily as a stabilizer or rudder for directional control. However, some dorsals have evolved for protective reasons in to spines or venomous rays.

Many catfish can lock the leading ray of the dorsal to prevent predation or to "wedge" themselves between rocks in fast flowing rivers.
